Devices and devices for people with disabilities

Materials and safety

Before choosing the type of suitable device to help people with disabilities, you should decide on the material of the product and installation methods that can ensure the proper level of safety, which is above all in this matter.

Devices for the disabled and the elderly are made exclusively from reliable materials – stainless steel, metal composites and complex plastics of high strength and stiffness. Sometimes there are wooden models, you need to be careful with them: it is important to check the quality of the fastening of individual elements.

Metal frames make seats, stands, and handrails. Skin contact areas are usually covered with rubber or anti-slip plastic.

Mounting to plumbing or wall is necessarily provided by the instructions for adaptation: each product is designed specifically for a bathtub, shower or toilet and repeat the shape of the base (wall or contour of the plumbing fixture). When fixing to the wall, ordinary fasteners with thread are used – self-tapping screws or dowels. There is only one piece of advice in this matter: read the instructions and do not neglect the rules for installing auxiliary devices.

When choosing “helpers” pay attention to the build quality and place of manufacture – beware of cheap fakes that can harm a person with disabilities. For example, thin plastic breaks under increased weight or force, flimsy connected metal tubes can also be dangerous – no one checks the carrying capacity of the frame for such.

Handrails for the bath

To cleanse the body, it is not enough to go to the restroom – you need to get into the bath itself. What can I say, this also requires skill from a healthy person. The handrail for the side is a universal assistant for everyone. It is attached to the wall of the plumbing equipment by a clamp (screw), fixed firmly and practically does not lend itself to shear. You can purchase the device in specialized stores.

The handrail can also be swivel, fixed on the wall. This is optimal for installation in cases where there is no possibility of fixation on board or with the personal preference of the user. He simultaneously acts as an assistant when entering the bath, and when moving in it. The fixture is mounted by fasteners directly into the wall through the cladding. It features high reliability.

Seats and stands for the bathroom

In addition to the handrail, in order to climb into the bathtub, elderly people often simply do not have enough growth, and an ordinary stool, in this case, is not the safest solution. It is rational to purchase a special stable stand with or without a handrail (if the separate one is already adapted to the wall of the bathtub).

Metal supports are necessarily equipped with a rubberized or plastic non-slip surface for the legs and caps on the legs – these prevent the product from moving even on a slippery floor. Step-platforms of the increased area for the convenience of visually impaired people.

The seats can be made in the form of a chair with a back or just like stools, based on the sides. The choice is made solely on the basis of the capabilities of the user.

The chair shown in the photo below is a seat for taking water procedures directly in the bath.

Handrail for a shower cabin

A bathtub is not the most convenient hygiene device for people with disabilities, therefore many bathrooms have shower enclosures with a low side or without it at all. For ease of use, such systems are equipped with a folding handrail. They hold on to him when they take water procedures. When a person who does not need such an “assistant” uses the shower, the handle is simply thrown back against the wall.

Bath lift

This adaptation is necessary for people with severely limited physical abilities, who do not have a shower cabin in the house but have a bathtub with a high side. The hydraulic lift lifts the person in the seat, turns in the right direction and lowers into the bath. The device can also be used outside the bathroom.

Bath with door

If there is no one to help, it’s hard for people with disabilities to get into the bath to wash. Know-How has been invented for them: a bath with a door. As a rule, it is equipped with a seat and an accessible showerhead. Such a plumbing fixture is one of the few opportunities to really relax and enjoy water procedures without serious efforts and outside help. The only moment – you have to collect water sitting in a closed bath, as well as drain it.

Handrails for the sink

You need to wash every day. This is more convenient to do if the sink has handrails because it is very dangerous to rely on plumbing itself.

Handrails can be attached to the wall, or they can frame the bowl and rest on the floor. By the way, they complement the interior well and do not interfere with the rest of the household at all. At the same time can act as a holder for towels.

Toilet facilities

In the postoperative period, in old age and with some restrictions on physical activity, going to the toilet becomes a daunting task. The difficulty to stand up or sit down is to solve the handrails installed near the toilets. Usually, these are tubes installed on both sides, pinched to a wall and/or floor.

For convenience, there are also lining on the toilet with handles. They act as handrails and help in the process of going to the toilet.

The toilet can be fully equipped for a person. In such a nozzle, handrails are built into the structure.

For those who find it difficult to go to the toilet for various reasons, separate chairs with urine collectors have been developed. They can be installed in the bathroom and in the living room, depending on the needs and capabilities of the disabled or elderly person.

Some tips for making the right choice

Regardless of which auxiliary device or device a person needs, it is important to adhere to several basic rules when choosing:

  • Any device is designed for a certain height and weight, beyond which it is strictly forbidden to go;
  • Products must be anti-slip if their purpose is to use in a bathtub or shower;
  • When choosing, the patient’s capabilities are taken into account, on which the shape of the handrail depends;
  • For the visually impaired, it is recommended to choose bright devices;
  • In advance, provide for the installation method and technical capabilities of the room. Fixtures can be attached to load-bearing walls, brick partitions, strong floors.
